Abdominal pain

Abdominal pain is a common symptom that can have various causes, ranging from minor issues to more serious underlying conditions. The location, intensity, and accompanying symptoms can help determine the cause of abdominal pain. Here are some potential causes of abdominal pain:

  1. Indigestion and Gas: Overeating, eating too quickly, or consuming gas-producing foods can lead to abdominal discomfort and pain. It is often temporary and subsides on its own.

  2. Gastroenteritis: Also known as stomach flu, gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection. It can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.

  3. Gastric Ulcers: Ulcers in the stomach or duodenum (upper part of the small intestine) can cause persistent abdominal pain, especially after eating. Other symptoms may include indigestion, heartburn, and nausea.

  4. Gallstones: Gallstones are hardened deposits that form in the gallbladder. When they cause a blockage or inflammation, it can result in severe upper abdominal pain, often on the right side. Pain attacks may be triggered by fatty meals.

  5. Appendicitis: Appendicitis is the inflammation of the appendix, a small organ located in the lower right abdomen. It typically causes severe pain that starts around the belly button and migrates to the lower right side. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and fever.

  6. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): IBS is a chronic disorder that affects the large intestine, causing symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, or diarrhea. It is often triggered by stress, certain foods, or hormonal changes.

  7. Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): Infections in the urinary tract, particularly the bladder, can cause lower abdominal pain or discomfort, along with a frequent urge to urinate, burning sensation, and cloudy urine.

  8. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): PID is an infection of the female reproductive organs, typically caused by sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It can cause abdominal pain, pelvic discomfort, abnormal vaginal discharge, and irregular menstrual bleeding.
